Smart Cities: Vision for The Future

Global Challenges and Megatrends

Contemporary cities are characterized by the concentration of diverse economic activities and intense human exchanges. They create an imminent threat to the way traditional analog cities are built and have a great impact on Planet Earth. Currently, cities are responsible for 75% of the energy consumption and 80% of CO2 production.

Main global challenges include:

  • Urbanization as a worldwide megatrend
  • Overloaded infrastructure
  • Climate change, natural disasters and energy/water scarcity

Consequently, creative and innovative approaches by city planners and engineers are needed, to keep with the increasing worldwide connectivity, driven by state-of-the-art technologies. The adaptation of the smart city concept, might be one way to solve those challenges. Already, many cities around the globe have claimed to be on their way to becoming smart.
